There are two different totals that match your description. The total records in your current found set or the total records in the table on which this layout is based.
For total records in your found set, define a summary field (remember them?) choose the "count of" option and select any field to "count" that is never empty for any of the records you will be counting with this summary field.
For all the records in your table, an unstored calculation feld defined with Get ( TotalRecordCount ) will return that figure.
For both counts, it's also possible to use the Insert Menu while in Layout mode to insert a layout text symbol that fileMaker will replace with either the found count or total record count.
