A FileMaker layout is very similar to an MS Access form, but it serves the purpose filled by both MS Access Reports and Forms.
In Access, each form or report is linked to a SQL Query that defines the record set for that form or report. In FileMaker, the set up is different. Each layout is linked to a specific Tutorial: What are Table Occurrences?--it functions a bit like a Select * query with no WHERE clause specified. But then you can perform finds to dynamically produce any number of different found sets that function much like the more static recordset specified in Access for a form or report.
And a "Portal" in FileMaker can serve the same role as a subForm or SubReport object in Access.
Ok... How do I migrate the fields I want over to the form?
Enter layout mode and...
1) Drag and drop from the field tool in the status area tool bar. (The specify fields dialog will open when you release the mouse button.)
2) Click the Field Picker button in the formatting tool bar. (New feature in FileMaker 13).
