Yes, you can do that, but when your friend first opens the file in FMP 11 I believe it will be automatically converted to the newer .fp7 format. If the database is fairly simple, as you say, then I don't imagine there will be any major problems, but you may want to read up on converting files first:
This page refers to FMP 10 but the same will pretty much apply to FMP 11.
A filemaker 6 file may not perfectly convert when opened with filemaker 10 or 11. You may have a number of minor adjustments you need to make. It would be easier to develop it in filemaker 11 from the start if you can.
