Drag and Drop embeds a physical copy of the file into the container field. It does not and cannot insert a reference to the file's current location.
If you are using FileMaker 12, you can specify external storage and then inserting a file (not by reference)--including drag and dropped files are copied to a specified location and the container field then refers to the copy in that external location.
It is also possible to set up an OnObjectModify trigger to perform a script that uses Export FIeld Contents to export the file to a specified location. The script can then re-insert the file with "store a reference" enabled to insert a reference to the file at this specified location.
Hello- Thanks for the quick and informative reply. Bummer, but at least I can stop banging my head into a wall trying to force it.
Ok, funny followup question... Is it possible to embed a link to a local location in FMP12? Sort like a URL, but to a local file location. I can copy the path from within OS X.
What do you mean by a "local location"?
You may find this thread and the file that you can download from it helpful. It's all about file paths, container fields and the script steps that can use a $Path variable: Exploring the use of a $Path Variable in Scripts
Yes... that article is helpful. I appreciate the reference. Thank you.
