Converted Databases Run Slowly
I've just converted a bunch of FM6 databases to version 11 and am in the process of testing it out. They are running incredibly slowly in FM11. Is this normal for converted databases?
I would guess that you have some obsolete file references slowing it down.
File > Manage > External Data Sources
I'd highly recommend using MetaDataMagic before conversion to clean this up, as well as alert you to other potential problems.
Thanks Tom. What is MetaDataMagic?
Thanks but it all seems a little technical to me. I'm not familiar with FM and have had this conversion task thrust upon me. Can someone explain to me in words of one syllable what MetaMagic does?
I would highly suggest reading the Migration Tech Briefs.
Then you will understand why that tool could be very valuable.
If you go to File > Manage > External Data Sources in your converted FM11 files, you'll see (if my theory is correct) a mess of redundant and out-of-date file paths listed.
Why does this matter? When you launch your files, FileMaker is going to go looking for referenced files in the solution. You said "a bunch," so I assume there are related files. In FM6 you could not control where FileMaker looked for these files, and consequently, file references would get added behind the scenes for various reason (e.g. files were moved around). So FileMaker sometimes needlessly tries to locate a referenced file in some networked non-existent location and it will attempt this with some persistence until the attempt times out. At that point it will try the next path in its list, etc. until it hits upon one that works or displays an error dialog.
MetaDataMagic cleans up that mess. It also lists other potential problems of the sort that you'll read about if you follow John's link, which is really a must-read.
