      Counting Portal Entries

      Post

           Using Filemakerpro 11 Is there a way to count entries in a portal so as to use that number in a calculation?

           Each record represents a person. In each record there is a Reference field that  may contain one other person's name.  The portal in each record contains the names of all persons who have referenced that person based on name matching with the
           Reference fields (using a Relationship).  Each person is to receive a discount based on the number of other persons who have referenced him.

           If a portal doesn't work, what scheme would you recommend to do this?

           I.E count the number of references each person receives and use it in a calculation.

               Count ( PortalTable::NeverEmptyField )

               Will return the number of records in your portal as long as the portal is not filtered. A summary field defined in the portal table can also be used to get this value. Both may be used in calculations as long as they evaluate from the context of the parent record.
