Yup, you're making it more complicated than it has to be.
In Layout mode, select the filed and then go to "Number Format". Pick your decimals, your currency symbol, your nose (but make sure no one's watching)...
Leave the "$" out of the field contents, format the field itself to make it show up.

Thanks for your reply Ninja. I do know how to format fields like you described, but I am merging this field into a letter and cannot use the number format option.
Is the letter in a layout in FMP? or somewhere else? I don't understand what you mean by "merge". I print letters out of FMP using a "Letters" layout...I can format the individual fields however I want on the layout (FMP8&9). Could you describe the 'merging' for me?

You can certainly format number fields merged within a text block: select the entire block, and choose Format > Number…. You only need a calculation if there are other number fields merged into the same text object, that aren't supposed to be formatted as currency.
