# Creating a calculation with the results containing currency symbols (\$1,000.00)

### Title

Creating a calculation with the results containing currency symbols (\$1,000.00)

### Post

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to create a calculation with results that contain currency symbols.  I need to take a total amount and divide it by half.  The half amount will be in a letters sent to college scholarship recipients (they get half for the first semester and half for the second semester).  I know that I can put the dollar sign here \$<<half amount>>, but I'm stuck on combining the comma, decimal and ending zero's.  So far my calculation looks like this:  totalamount/2&".00", which gives me 1000.00, but no comma.

I'm probably making this way more complex than it is, so I would truly appreciate any help!!

Howdy jkeebler,

Thanks for the post.

Yup, you're making it more complicated than it has to be.

In Layout mode, select the filed and then go to "Number Format".  Pick your decimals, your currency symbol, your nose (but make sure no one's watching)...

Leave the "\$" out of the field contents, format the field itself to make it show up.

Is this what you're after?

Thanks for your reply Ninja.  I do know how to format fields like you described, but I am merging this field into a letter and cannot use the number format option.

Howdy jkeebler,

Is the letter in a layout in FMP? or somewhere else?  I don't understand what you mean by "merge".  I print letters out of FMP using a "Letters" layout...I can format the individual fields however I want on the layout (FMP8&9).  Could you describe the 'merging' for me?

Sorry my brain is being slow...

You can certainly format number fields merged within a text block: select the entire block, and choose Format > Number…. You only need a calculation if there are other number fields merged into the same text object, that aren't supposed to be formatted as currency.
