Creating a relationship with a portal item

      Post

      Hello --

I am using FileMaker's BPS templates to start a inventory/invoicing system and trying to get a field that is in a portal on an invoice to report back to the inventory page what invoice it is on and that it was sold (all items are unique in this business, so all inventory levels are "1").

But, since the Invoice database is using a portal to "see" part numbers from the Inventory database, how can I set up a relationship that will allow the reverse?  Am I missing something?  Becasue it is on a portal, the Invoice DB doesn't have a field I can have the Inventory hook into, right?

      thanks for any help,

      Don

Is this the "lineItems" portal typical of an invoicing system?

If so, you have this relationship:

          Invoices---<LineItems>----Products

          Is inventory tracked in Products?

If you do then you can trace back from products to line items to Invoices via this relationship. (This only works since each item is unique.)

You can add fields from the Invoices table directly on a layout based on Products, such as an invoice number, invoice date, etc.
