Creating individual record counts for sub summaries?

Hello there

First things first, I'm using FileMaker 5.5 on a Mac running OS 10.5.8 and I'm having a bit of a problem which I'm hoping you can help me with.

I'm managing a database of training courses. Each course has its own record in a database called "course dates", and each person attending any of the 30 courses we run has an individual record in a database called "course bookings" that looks up the specific course information from the course dates database. With me so far? Good.

What I'd like to be able to do is create a layout which displays each of the courses we run and clearly displays the number of participants that are booked onto that specific course. I've tried playing around with sub summaries in both the "course bookings" database and via a portal in the "course dates" database, but I don't appear to be getting anywhere fast, so I thought I'd check on here to see if anyone's had success doing a similar thing before.

Any light that you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated!
