Since tool tips only appear if you hover the mouse over the field, you might also set a script trigger to pop up a custom dialog with this message when the field is entered or exited. Having to dismiss numerous dialogs of this sort can get annoying for users who have gotten familiar with the needs of your layout so you'd want to use this technique sparingly--reserving it for only the most critical data entry needs.
Another trick is to place a text field on your layout and have your triggered scripts put relevant instructional text in this field as the field is entered and clear it on exit. This has the advantage of not requiring the user to dismiss custom dialogs with each such field.
Thanks, the problem with the tooltip is it only displays a single line. I have 5-6 lines of text I need the user to read before making a selection on the data field.
Thanks, this is what I was looking for. The only problem are two things:
1. Compatibility, e.g. the script step Show Custom Dialog is not supported in web publishing or not supported in a FileMaker Server scheduled script. This is major as the Db will be primarily entered via a browser from an iPad.
2. The dialog box doesn't cater for any carriage returns, e.g. I cannot enter any lines between the paragraphs so it's one big jumble of text.
I'm still searching for a solution to this... :)
@PhilModJunk - I've tried placing a text field on your layout and having triggered scripts put relevant instructional text and this works on a desktop but fails on IWP :(
Any other suggestions? :)
As script triggers do not work in IWP, none of what I suggested will work for that reason.
BTW you can put carriage returns in custom dialogs.
"Line1" & ¶¶ & "Line2"
In a custom dialog will appear as:
This still doesn't solve the problem for you as you are still stuck without the ability to use script triggers.
