Designating Fields on Tab-Sep File Import with Carriage Returns

This may not be possible, but it would save me a ton of trouble if it can be done.  I am importing into my database a tab separated variable file with a set of roughly 10,000 records, and one of the fields originally contained carriage returns.  This field is bounded in every entry by quotation marks; is there any way to instruct filemaker to treat everything contained within those marks as one field so that it doesnt assume each new line is a new record and totally throw off my import?  I know I could manually go in and remove the carriage returns from each record, but that would take a ton of time and I would prefer to preserve them within the field on the import if possible.  I haven't been able to find a way to designate this on a filemaker import like you can with Excel, so it may not be possible, but if there's a way to do this or something similar that would be great.  Thanks!
