          Home > Reference > Script steps reference > Miscellaneous script steps > Dial Phone

          Dial Phone
          Dials a phone from within a script.
          Dial Phone [No dialog; <phone number>]
          Perform without dialog prevents the Dial Phone dialog box from displaying when the script step executes.
          Click Specify to display the “Dial Phone” Options dialog box where you can set the following options.
          Phone Number lets you enter a phone number to dial.
          Specify lets you create a calculation to generate the phone number.
          Use Dialing Preferences (if NDISWAN TAPI is not installed) tells FileMaker Pro to use the current phone dialing preferences, based on your location. These preferences remove, insert, and append digits to phone numbers, as when a dialing prefix is required in a business setting. This option can apply to phone numbers provided from a field value or to a number that the user enters. (If TAPI is installed, modem and dialing preferences are set in the Phone Dialer accessory application.)
          This script step is:
          not supported in web publishing
          not supported in a FileMaker Server scheduled script
          You can enter a phone number or specify a calculation to create a phone number. You can also choose whether to use the current phone preferences based on your current location. You can specify number, text, calculation, or global fields, and letters within the phone number are translated to numbers (except for q and z).
          Important  The Dial Phone script step is not supported in Mac OS X.
          The following script repeatedly dials the phone number in the PhoneNumber field, up to ten times.
          Set Field [Contacts::gCount; 0]
          Dial Phone [No dialog; Contacts::PhoneNumber]
          Set Field [Contacts::gCount; Contacts::gCount + 1]
          Exit Loop If [Contacts::gCount > 10]
          End Loop
          This script dials local directory assistance.
          Dial Phone [No dialog; 411]

          Dial Phone From X

          This AppleScript-based solution can be used to automatically dial the phone using your computer's modem from within a variety of applications, including Address Book, FileMaker, and Excel.

          PLEASE NOTE: Since AppleScript cannot dial the phone alone, the application ABDialer, available from Macron Software, is required for this solution to function. Automated Workflows, LLC does not sell licenses for or accept support inquiries regarding ABDialer. To order ABDialer or inquire about ABDialer support, please contact Macron Software.

          Another FileMaker Phone Solution

          In my March Mac 911 column I recommended a solution for adding phone-dialing capabilities to recent versions of FileMaker Pro (phone dialing was supported in older versions of FileMaker but has since disappeared). That solution was Automated Workflows’ $15 Dial Phone From X accompanied with Macron Soft’s $12 ABDialer 2.

          Jon Nathan writes in to say that his $12 Jon’s Phone Tool —includes dialing from FileMaker Pro as well as many other applications. Additionally it can dial through a Bluetooth phone, your Mac’s modem or speakers, and works with Vonage, CallVantage, Skype, Ovolab Phlink, Parliant’s PhoneValet, an Asterisk PBX server, or X-Lite by Xten Networks, Inc.

          It also includes a call timer, text-to-phone converter (for those times when you’d rather not search your phone for the translation to 1-800-NOSCROD), a dialing log, and a Lookup feature for quickly pulling up phone numbers stored in Apple’s Address Book, Microsoft’s Entourage, Now Software’s Now Contact, or Palm’s Palm Desktop.

          It’s worth a look.

             Ok I understand that part but can you use this and have a recording setup to call everyone in the database to and tell them weather alert, birthday wishes etc when you hit the call button.

              Dial Phone was obsolete until FM Go came out and now it can be used to dial an iPhone. It was used with various widgits back in the day when dial up fax/modems were standard equipment on your computer.

              Today, it can be difficult to find any hardware that works with it and a modern computer.
