Easy way to number rows in a portal?

I'm using Filemaker 10 on Windows Vista or 7...

I have 2 problems.

First, I'm trying to figure out an easy way to number portal rows.

I have a portal that is sorted by a date field in reverse order.  I'm trying to get a 1 to show up in the first row, a 2 to show up in the second row and so on.

I'm sure there is an easy way to do this, but i can't think of anything at the moment.

Second, I'm trying to show the number of records in a portal.

In other words, let's say there are 5 rows in a portal.  I want to display "5" on the layout that the portal appears in.

I was thinking i could accomplish this by having a 1 in all the records in the table that the portal points to.  I could then display a total of these for all the records that match the criteria that the 2 tables are matched on.

I'm wondering if there is a better way to go about this than the scenario above.

Any help would be appreciated!
