I can't quite understand what you have written. Are you selecting a mentor on the student form in order to link the current student to a single mentor? What relationship do you have?
Can a student only be linked to a single mentor or might it be necessary to link a student to more than one mentor?
Yes, I am selecting a mentor on the student form to be assigned to a student. Each student is only assigned one mentor.
They are linked by mentor.id.
mentor.id = student.mentor_id
Then you should be able to format Student::mentor_ID with a value list for selecting a Mentor. This would only modify the current student record, nothing else. It requires a value list of Mentor ID's from the mentor table and normally such a value list lists the ID's from the Mentor Table for field 1 and a name field form the same table for field 2. This allows users to select a mentor by name, but the value list actually enters the needed ID number.
That's the "basic beginner level" way to set this up. More sophisticated options that make working with long lists of values easier can also be used in place of such a value list.
I have setup it up as you have mentioned already, I wanted to know if there was an alternate way to do it.
So, there is no way I can just display the name even though its using the id?
As I said in my last post there are alternate methods, but even this method can do what you describe. If you select the "Show Only Values from Second FIeld" option and use a pop up menu format for the value list, you'll only see the name, not the ID.
And a drop down list can do the same with a bit of layout trickery. Place the name field from Mentors on your layout. Give it an opaque fill color and use the behavior settings in the Inspector to deny access to the field when in Browse mode. then place this field on top of the drop down list field to hide it from view. Do not select the arrow option for the drop down list. When you click on the name field, the hidden drop down list will deploy and display mentor names. After you select a mentor, the drop down list field disappears and you see the name.
Then there are the selection methods demo'd in these files:
