      Entering data into multiple records

      Post

Maybe this is easy, but I can't work it out.

Is there an easy way of entering the same data into a blank field (or multiple fields) in all the records in a found set?

      Thanks

          Howdy Sunjar,

Have you looked at a script with a loop or Find/Replace?  I'm not a big user of Find/Replace, so I'm not sure if it works into blank fields or not...

A script would look something like:

          Enter Find mode

Setfield [Field1; criteria1] /#repeat as needed to get your found set#/

          Go to Record/Request [First]

          SetField [TheField; TheValue]

          GotoRecord/Request {Next, exit after last]

          EndLoop

If you're looking at 10-50 records, you might think of manual copy&paste

If you're looking at 20,000 look into Find/replace or a looping script.

Save A Backup Copy First !

If it's the same field in every record of the found set you want to modify, use Replace Field Contents.

As Ninja said, it's a good idea to make a back up copy first, just incase you accidently modify a bunch of records the wrong way when you first try out these techniques.

              Thanks Phil,

Not being a big user of it, I wasn't sure if Find/Replace could be limited to a found set or not.

              Enjoy the day!

Careful, Find/Replace and Replace Field Contents are two different tools. They have different features. I'd check out both in the help file to see which is the better option for the problem posted in this thread.

                  Thanks for your replies.

I have tried Find/Replace (over many months) but can't get it to work properly on blank fields.

I have been using Copy&Paste, but often it's several fields I need to update in each record (and it gets to be a bit of a drag).

I'll have a go at the script.

                  Thanks
