Are the PDF files physically stored in the field or just a reference to the file?
If the file is physically stored in the container field, use Export Field Contents in the Edit menu instead of Export records.
In a script, you can set up a loop that steps through each record and exports the container field contents of each record in turn.
The pdf files are physically stored inside the database, however there seems to be a difference when clicking insert file and insert object into the container, if insert object is selected you cannot export the contents, i need to easily export these pdf files stored in my clients database how ever they are stored as a pdf object, is it possible to convert this to a 'file' because it seems this is the only way everything will work properly
Hmm, that's not so easy.
Maybe another poster has a better method but you can isolate those records where the container contains an object instead of a file. Then you can either double-click the field for each such record and save the document after it has been opened by Acrobat reader. Or you can do basically the same thing with a loop that uses Go To Field with the select/Perform option selected followed by a pause so you can save the file. Either way, this will be very tedious if you have large numbers of these.
To find all such records where the file was inserted as an object:
Define a calculation field set to return text and select your container field as it's "expression".
Now enter find mode and enter "?" (include the quotes) and perform the find.
Anyone else know of a better way?
its hard because 1000's of these pdf's are stored and im trying to integrate 360works email into the solution, unfortunately this will only work if its a 'file' stored not a pdf or object, i could save and re enter the files but with the amount in the database its beyond too much work
store as object references a file published by an OLE compatible application
Store as File references the location and name of that file
Store as PDF references the location and name of that PDF
The problem would appear to be the objects location may depend on another application.
If the objects could be collected into the same location as the Files and PDFs...
good shot in the right direction, starting to see where the problems are lying, unfortunately it appears the only solution would be if filemake could convert an object stored in a container as a pdf to a file stored in a container, if anyone has any idea of how this bit could be done or if theres a plugin, speak up!
