    Fields on a layout

      Fields on a layout

I am studying FM12 before upgrading from 10.  As part of that exercise, I am reconstructing the Contacts Template that ships with 12.

At the top of the contact details form, there is a 'field' called "Contact Name Labels".  In this instance, rather than being the traditional field I am used to working with, this has been placed as text and encapsulated in <<  >>.

Can somebody tell me what this technique is known as and why its done?

      Many thanks

This is called a merge field.

You can create one from layout mode by going to "Insert" - "Merge Field"

Or you first create a text field and then do "Insert" - "Merge Field" (or Crtl - M on windows)

You can combine a merge field with other text. Like on a letter:

          Dear <<Title>> <<LastName>>

The down point on a layout is that you can't perform a find on a merge field.

I always use merge fields to put a calculated FullName field That combines the Firstname and the Lastname on the top of a layout.
