      file access on an I-disc

      Post

First I realize that this is not how filemaker is intended to be used...

I have my file on a public folder for others in my business to access. I don't have a static IP address & all have the program loaded...

      It works without errors.

      The problem is this:

I have users set up with their own passwords (but I'm not publishing)

When they log in it auto loads with my profile (no password needed)

It doesn't LOCK a second user from accessing at the same time.

Is there a way to only alow one user at a time?

          Thank you for your post.

I'm assuming you have Network Sharing turned off (File -> Sharing).

Also, you have an account privilege for guest and Admin access.  (Manage -> Accounts & Privileges)

What other security issues have you attached to the database file?

            No I had sharing on...

as for privileges. I have myself with full access... the others with limited... but it never asks them for a password...

Just to  say again... I'm not so concerned about them having full access... If we both have it open it only will keep one or both?  So, I need to make it either lock out the second user or save all...

If you want to lock out a second user, then turn sharing off.  This only allows one user at a time to access the file.

i tested it with my wife logged in..

I tried to open from another computor and It says...

1st- filemaker cannot share a file because network sharing is turned off.

2nd - file is a shared files. opening a shared ile remotly will reduce performance.. etc.. do you still want to open... hitting open still opens the file...

I turned off network share on both laptops...

I have tried it here with a server, and it works as expected.  I then accessed my iDisk, and it is acting exactly like you described.  It appears the iDisk is handled differently by the OS than with a traditional server.  Other support technicians here confirm that the iDisk is not supported.

Interestingly, I did not receive the message you did.  The person with the iDisk account is able to open the file fully.  Even when not opened, any other guest user to the iDisk does not have read/write access, even if they log on with a password with full privileges.

You definitely need a static IP address for two people to share.

Through Apple's Mobile me you can assign a password and designate read write privilege...

Are they working on a work around...?

I honestly don't know if MobileMe is working on a way to set a static IP address.

If I have a HTTP:// address that never changes for that folder, is that the same?

                          again thanks for the help...

You still need the IP address.  That is what FileMaker uses to keep track of files being shared.  If you find out what the IP address that http:// resolves to, then you should be in business.
