Great presentation by Erica Tamburo on using FM to track MRI imaging and ultimately new treatments for cognitive issues such as Altzheimer's and brain trauma. Also had a good discussion about the benefits of Get UUID.
Note: Presentation begins at 9 minutes in.

Isn’t there already software for this kind of medical data???
The point of using FileMaker in a lot of situations is that the "already software", often is not what is needed (wholly or partially). It's like asking, "Isn't SQL dbs enough for everything?" Even FMI will say they are for workgroups of the Fortune( x ) companies. And there are the FM apps that integrate with other "already software".
My clients may have software that just did not do what they wanted, so I got the call...
True indeed. It got me thinking how often the 'isn't it already there?' question is not asked or answered very superficially?
And, how often there indeed was no suitable software at some point, a custom made database commissioned and then some years later made superfluous because of newly created 'already there' software. After all, most companies and users - such as researchers, since we are in this user group - are actually not that unique in their needs.
Then there would be a business case to take a risk and develop software somewhat more generic than commissioned, right? Probably, you'll need to discuss this with the commissioning partner.
All those MRIs remind me of the study done on people learning and practicing juggling. A 5% increase in white matter!
There's software to handle smaller components of what we do but nothing that gives us the ability to do what we can with FileMaker. When we started building our needs were simple and sure I could have used about any database software. Today there are alternatives such as RedCap to handle research data and a few different Medical Imaging databases. There's nothing that would allow me to build our research methods and drive our data collection and analysis that I am aware of. It's not just a database, it's a process management tool as well.
I'll have to read that article!

Oh good, maybe someone who can explain it to me. A grad student in the juggling club said it's not possible.
Interesting. I looked at doing a medical image database once and at that time and for that client use, all things pointed to using something that was already in the market.
Yes! I had/have that happen, too. The "pointed to using something" can be what is used. And if at all possible, hooks with FileMaker are included. That's the integration part that I promote as much as possible.
These are the requests from my clients and I'm sure from yours. If there is nothing that connect to FM, then my clients are often as dissapointed as I am, but we wait few and see what's new in the Next and Next Next...
I'd be interested to know what you were looking at. OSIRIX/HOROS, Purview, XNAT, and Flywheel are all alternatives that we've considered but none would meet all of our needs. We do a lot of our own in-house image analysis pipeline development so while these databases might handle organizing and viewing images that is just a small portion of what we do.
